How We Can Help
Every therapeutic Pilates session is private and tailored to you. Choose the focus that fits your needs, or call and we’ll help you decide.
01
Gentle, carefully guided therapeutic Pilates that supports recovery from orthopedic and neurological injuries. Exercises are modified to your specific condition and progressed only when your body is ready.
02
Finished with physical therapy but not yet back to full strength? Post-rehab sessions bridge the gap, rebuilding stability, mobility and confidence so you can return to the activities you love.
03
A bone-safe approach that focuses on posture, balance and targeted strengthening, while avoiding the movements that place vulnerable bones at risk.
04
Low-impact, joint-friendly exercise that improves mobility and eases stiffness. The springs and supports of the Pilates equipment let you move with less strain and more control.
05
Thoughtful support before and after pregnancy. Sessions focus on breathing, the deep core and the pelvic floor, helping you stay strong during pregnancy and recover well afterward.
06
For seniors and anyone coming back to exercise after a long illness, surgery or injury. Through gentle therapeutic Pilates, we reintroduce assisted movement and basic strengthening at a pace that feels safe and achievable.
07
Pilates helps counter the muscle and bone loss that can come with menopause, while improving balance, posture, sleep and mood. Each session is designed to support your body through this transition.
08
Build real, lasting strength. We start with proper form and breathing on foundational exercises, then progress gradually into a well-rounded strength program.
Pilates has grown from a fitness method into a trusted tool for rehabilitation. Research supports therapeutic Pilates as an effective approach for common orthopedic and neurological conditions, with results comparable to, and in some cases better than, other forms of rehabilitation. For example, a Cochrane review of Pilates for low back pain (opens in a new tab) found it more effective than minimal intervention for pain and disability.
Everyday movements such as standing, turning, walking and lifting can be modified to suit your physical condition, respecting the specific precautions for issues like disc herniation, rotator cuff tears, multiple sclerosis and stroke.
Springs, resistance bands, levers and supported positions let us adjust the effect of gravity. You work effectively without the overexertion and fatigue common in conventional exercise.
By focusing on core stability and a neutral spine, Pilates strengthens the deep stabilizing muscles. This helps correct postural imbalances, ease chronic weakness and reduce the risk of re-injury.

From the Inside Out
Pilates works the body from the inside out. It begins with the deep muscles of the core (the diaphragm, pelvis, lower back and glutes) and then moves outward to the chest, shoulders, upper back and limbs. Every movement is centered on the “powerhouse,” your body’s foundation of strength.
Practiced regularly, Pilates combines spinal awareness, proper breathing, strength and flexibility into one complete method. Because injuries often develop where the body compensates for imbalances, Pilates helps you understand and correct those patterns, so you heal more efficiently and are less likely to be injured again. That understanding is the foundation of every therapeutic Pilates program at Smart Moves Pilates.
For most healthy pregnancies, moderate exercise is safe and beneficial, and it may help prevent varicose veins and low back pain. Every pregnancy is different, so some exercises are appropriate for one person and not another. Research suggests not starting a new exercise routine during the first trimester and avoiding overworking the abdominal muscles. Always check with your doctor first, then call us to talk through a safe plan.
Pilates is gentle and controlled, with no sudden or jarring movements, which makes it a good fit for many people with back pain. The key is learning the variation of each exercise that is right for your body. Please consult your physician before starting any new fitness routine.
Pilates can be a powerful part of your recovery. Because Mary is a licensed physical therapist as well as a certified Pilates instructor, your sessions are designed with your condition, precautions and goals in mind. If you are currently under a doctor’s or therapist’s care, please share their guidance with us so we can support your plan.
